宿屋 en — 21年目の新たな挑戦と、百年檜の物語
現在マツトシでは、3月15日の創立記念日に「宿屋 en」を新事業として開設する準備を進めています。
築140年以上の古民家をフルリノベーションし、マツトシのスタッフが手を加え、さらに熟練の職人さんの力も借りながら、一つひとつ丁寧に形にしています。
その屋敷の裏には、約100年ものあいだ育ち続けていた一本の檜がありました。
しかし、その檜は家と塀のわずかな隙間に立っており、
- 木が大きくなりすぎて根が家を押し上げる可能性
- 台風などで折れた場合、家屋や隣地に倒れ込む危険性
こうしたリスクを抱えていました。
安全面を考え、今回その檜を伐採するという決断をしました。
ただ、100年近い命を「切って終わり」にするつもりはありません。
その檜は、新しい形で生き続けます。
- 家の 大黒柱 として生まれ変わる
- 残りの木は、暖炉の薪・釜・焚き火として活かす
- 最も太い根元は、庭の ベンチ として再利用する
木の命を無駄にせず、“つなぐ”形で未来に残していきます。
マツトシでは、21年目から30年目に向けての10年を
「つなぐ10年」 として歩みたいと考えています。
この「宿屋 en」もまた、
過去から未来へ、暮らしと命をつないでいく象徴となるように──
想いを込めて、日々準備を進めています。
YADOYA en — A New Beginning in Our 21st Year, and the Story of a Hundred-Year Hinoki
Matsutoshi is preparing to open YADOYA en on March 15th, the anniversary of our company’s founding.
We are fully renovating a 140-year-old traditional house, combining the hands-on work of our staff with the expertise of skilled craftsmen to shape it with care.
Behind the residence stood a hinoki cypress that had grown for nearly a century.
However, it was located in a narrow space between the house and the outer wall, creating several risks:
- The expanding roots could eventually lift and damage the house.
- If a typhoon were to break the tree, it could fall onto the home or the neighboring property.
For safety reasons, we made the difficult decision to cut down the tree.
Yet we never intended for a 100-year-old life to simply be “cut and discarded.”
The hinoki will continue to live on in new forms:
- It will be reborn as the main pillar of the inn.
- Other parts will be used as firewood for the fireplace, stove, and outdoor fires.
- The thickest base will be crafted into a bench for the garden.
By giving new purpose to the tree, its life is not ending—it is being passed on, connected to the future.
As Matsutoshi moves from its 21st year toward its 30th,
we envision this decade as the “Ten Years of Connection.”
YADOYA en embodies that philosophy—
a place where the past is honored, the present is shaped with care,
and the future is quietly, gently connected.
